Web3 contains many sectors, but attention, asset value and sustained usage measure different things. An expensive NFT sale, a gaming reward campaign or growth in tokenized assets cannot individually establish that an entire sector is gaining momentum.
This guide covers NFTs, GameFi, DeFi, tokenized stocks, zero-knowledge proofs, the metaverse, real-world assets and stablecoins. It explains recent signals and practical ways for users and developers to participate.
1. Sector activity at a glance
The ratings use two perspectives: market attention considers capital, trading and recent events; application activity considers usage, ongoing operations and verifiable demand. High, medium and low are relative judgments. Metrics from different platforms are not added together, and missing data does not establish an absence of users.
| Sector | Market attention assessment | Application activity assessment | Common participation models | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NFTs | Low–medium; concentrated | Medium; utility-specific | Collecting, memberships, tickets, game items | Real buyers and delivered benefits |
| GameFi | Medium; uneven | Medium; active pockets | Ranked seasons, quests, items, creation | Retention and sustainable rewards |
| DeFi | High; active trading | High; financial infrastructure | Swaps, lending, liquidity, yield separation | Volume, revenue and utilization |
| Tokenized stocks | High; asset growth | Medium; mixed engagement | Stock tokens, price exposure, data tools | Holder rights and executable liquidity |
| Zero-knowledge proofs | Medium; technical audience | Medium–high; infrastructure | Scaling, private identity, verifiable computation | Proving costs and actual integrations |
| Metaverse | Low–medium; event-driven | Low–medium; community applications | Virtual events, wearables, world creation | Return visits and creator earnings |
| RWA | High; institutional interest | Medium–high; varies by asset | Tokenized funds, credit, gold | Legal rights, redemption and net flows |
| Stablecoins and payments | High; foundational demand | High; settlement utility | Transfers, payments, treasury operations | Supply, settlement quality and redemption |
The evidence behind these judgments follows below. Confidence is lower for GameFi, ZK and the metaverse because this review could not verify a consistent recent industry-wide user dataset. A project announcement establishes ongoing operations at that project, rather than growth across its sector.
2. NFTs: collectibles and specific access rights
Current activity: low–medium, concentrated in leading collections
During research, CoinGecko's NFT dashboard reported approximately $1.64 billion in market capitalization and $1.47 million in 24-hour volume, with CryptoPunks accounting for roughly 47% of tracked capitalization. Coverage is limited to the platform's tracked collections, and a single day cannot establish a long-term trend. The editorial assessment is a concentrated market where liquidity requires collection-level checks.
Ways to participate
- Collecting and trading: study the creator, supply and transaction history before minting or buying. A floor price is the lowest listing, rather than a guaranteed exit price.
- Memberships, tickets and credentials: verify access to events, communities or benefits. Check expiry dates, redemption mechanics and delivery obligations.
- Games and digital items: own, trade or create equipment, skins and wearables. Usability depends on platform and game support.
- Building tools: create ticket verification, ownership checks, benefit redemption and creator sales tools.
Main risks: thin markets, artificial volume, malicious approvals and differences between token ownership and copyright. Read the collection's license.
3. GameFi: evaluate the game before its rewards
Current activity: medium, with substantial differences between products
GameFi combines games with onchain assets and economic mechanisms. One recent example is Axie Infinity's Origins S19 announcement: the season launched on September 30, 2026, using non-transferable bAXS rewards. This demonstrates continued iteration of seasons and incentives, rather than an industry-wide recovery. Rewards cannot automatically be treated as saleable income.
Ways to participate
- Competitive seasons: develop skills, decks and teams for ranked play or tournaments under the published rules.
- Quests and exploration: complete story, event or community objectives. Distinguish points and items from assets with transfer restrictions.
- Item economies: craft, combine or trade equipment while comparing acquisition costs, utility and actual buyers.
- Content creation: publish guides, community games, events or tools, creating opportunities beyond token rewards.
Two hours of daily play only supports an economic return calculation after item depreciation, fees and redeemability are considered. Seven-day and 30-day retention and paying players are more informative than connected wallets alone.
Main risks: reward inflation, item depreciation, changing rules and activity inflated by bots or farming operations.
4. DeFi: high activity requires a clear explanation of yield
Current activity: high, with trading and lending as useful observation points
At the research snapshot, DefiLlama showed approximately $85.045 billion in total value locked and $58.211 billion in seven-day DEX volume, up 37.85% from the previous period. This supports the recent trading activity assessment. TVL is price-sensitive, and volume can include arbitrage or incentivized trades rather than new users.
Ways to participate
- DEX swaps: exchange assets while comparing execution prices, slippage and network fees.
- Lending and borrowing: supply assets or borrow against collateral. Aave's supply documentation explains that rates depend on utilization and other parameters, so lending yield is variable.
- Providing liquidity: supply pool assets for fees; trading activity, price ranges and impermanent loss affect results.
- Yield separation and derivatives: examine how future yield is divided into different claims, or how perpetuals handle margin and funding. These require deeper understanding.
For a stablecoin liquidity pool, separate trading fees and borrowing demand from token subsidies. Evaluate net income = realized income − transaction fees − borrowing costs − hedging and asset losses. Annualizing a temporary reward does not make it a dependable return.
Main risks: contract exploits, oracle failures, liquidation, stablecoin depegs and risk transmitted through interconnected protocols.
5. Tokenized stocks: distinguish stock tokens from price contracts
Current activity: high attention, with diverging asset value and engagement
The RWA.xyz stocks dashboard showed approximately $3.89 billion in Distributed Value, up 18.85% from 30 days earlier, while monthly active addresses declined 89.51% over the comparison period. Asset growth and engagement are moving differently. Addresses are not people, and transfer volume is not exchange trading volume.
This section focuses on onchain stock-related products. Exchange operators, miners and crypto treasury companies listed through traditional brokers provide a separate form of conventional equity exposure.
Ways to participate
- Asset-backed stock tokens: inspect issuance, custody, redemption and corporate actions to understand the specific rights attached to the instrument.
- Synthetic exposure and equity perpetuals: track prices through collateral or derivatives. These generally do not grant ownership of underlying shares and may involve funding costs and liquidation.
- Data and developer tools: compare onchain and reference prices, or build premium, depth, NAV and trading-hours dashboards.
For example, xStocks' official documentation describes underlying stock or ETF backing and different operating hours for trading versus issuance and redemption. Review each product's rights and geographical restrictions individually; one issuer's structure does not describe every stock token.
Main risks: issuer and custody failures, mismatched trading hours, price deviations, regional eligibility and differences from direct shareholder rights.
6. Zero-knowledge proofs: technical adoption and token markets differ
Current activity: medium–high in technical applications, medium market attention
ZK is a family of cryptographic techniques. Ethereum's ZK introduction describes privacy and verification applications, while its privacy roadmap includes selective disclosure. These support the assessment of ongoing infrastructure development, without establishing token demand or commercial revenue.
Ways to participate
- Scaling applications: use validity-proof networks and compare fees, confirmation experience and exit mechanisms. Validity proofs do not automatically make transaction contents private.
- Private identity: demonstrate eligibility or age while limiting unnecessary disclosure.
- Verifiable computation: verify that a program followed specified rules, with applications explored in games, data processing and cross-system verification.
- Development and contribution: build small proof generation, verification and benchmarking projects from official examples.
Users can explore applications; developers can study proving systems and toolchains. Providing proving services additionally requires hardware, demand and cost analysis. Testnet use, points and tasks do not establish an airdrop commitment.
Main risks: circuit and implementation bugs, proving costs, upgrade controls, bridges and assuming technical usage creates token value.
7. The metaverse: events, creation and return visits
Current activity: low–medium, centered on communities and specific events
A recent example is Decentraland Halloweeks 2026, which ran from October 5 to November 2, featuring gatherings, quests and a wearable creation contest. It had ended by the research cutoff. It illustrates product mechanics rather than an available reward opportunity or evidence of sector-wide growth.
Ways to participate
- Events and social experiences: join exhibitions, performances, gatherings or games after checking device requirements and schedules.
- User-generated content: design clothing, emotes, scenes and interactive experiences for publication or sale under platform rules.
- Brand and technical services: provide scene design, tours, event operations and analytics.
- Land and space operations: assess operational value where actual events or rental demand exist.
Return visits, repeat creator earnings and onboarding steps offer more useful evidence than virtual land listing prices alone.
Main risks: temporary traffic, platform dependence, illiquid land or items and incorrectly counting all conventional gaming or VR users as Web3 users.
8. RWA: tokens need enforceable underlying rights
Current activity: high attention, stable aggregate value and differences by asset class
Real-world asset tokenization brings asset-related claims onchain. During research, the RWA.xyz overview showed approximately $39.4 billion in Distributed Asset Value, up 0.24% from 30 days earlier. This is a snapshot under that metric's definition. It should not be conflated with separately reported Represented Asset Value or double-counted with stablecoins and stock subcategories.
Ways to participate
- Tokenized Treasury or money market funds: subscribe if eligible and examine holdings, management fees and redemption schedules.
- Onchain credit: investigate borrowers, collateral, default procedures and repayment priority rather than only headline yield.
- Gold and other physical assets: verify custody, reserve disclosures, minimum redemption units and delivery costs.
- Developer and service opportunities: build disclosures, NAV updates, eligibility checks and redemption tracking.
Returns should correspond to identifiable underlying interest, rent or operating cash flows. Buying an RWA protocol's governance token does not establish ownership of its underlying Treasuries, gold or loans.
Main risks: weak legal claims, custody or borrower defaults, restricted redemption and tokens that are transferable but lack secondary-market buyers.
9. Stablecoins and payments: high utility does not imply expanding supply
Current activity: high, with settlement quality as the priority
The DefiLlama stablecoin dashboard and overview showed approximately $292.503 billion in stablecoin capitalization, down 1.76% over seven days at the research snapshot. The high activity assessment refers to existing scale and settlement utility, rather than a claim of recent net inflows.
Ways to participate
- Payments and transfers: transact within supported regions and services, comparing network fees, settlement time and conversion costs.
- Merchant and team treasury operations: integrate payment acceptance, reconciliation, multisignature controls and batch payments.
- DeFi integration: explore lending or liquidity provision. Ordinary stablecoin balances generally do not accrue yield automatically; yield comes from a separate product or protocol.
- Developer tools: implement payment notifications, confirmations, refunds, accounting exports and exception monitoring.
A successful onchain transfer is only part of a payment workflow. Merchants must match the network, asset and amount to an order, then handle duplicate callbacks and underpayments.
Main risks: depegs, issuer or custody failures, freezing powers, confusion between bridged versions and unavailable entry or exit channels.
10. Where to start for different goals
Users exploring products
Choose one sector and complete a full experience: find the official entry point, understand fees and permissions, use the core feature and verify the exit or redemption process. Free games, virtual events and public dashboards are useful starting points. Where funds are involved, use a small amount whose loss is affordable to understand the mechanism; test rewards are not income commitments.
Developers choosing a project
Start with a problem you can solve: NFT benefit verification, GameFi retention tools, DeFi position analysis, stock-token premium dashboards, ZK eligibility proofs, metaverse scenes, RWA disclosure or stablecoin reconciliation. Reducing user effort, explaining risk and supporting repeated use matter more than the sector label.
Observers tracking the industry
Record consistent metrics for each sector, then compare seven-day and 30-day changes:
| Sector | Metrics to record |
|---|---|
| NFTs | Unique buyers, sales, bid depth, benefit delivery |
| GameFi | Active players, 7/30-day retention, payer rate, reward spending |
| DeFi | TVL, net flows, volume, fees, protocol revenue |
| Tokenized stocks | Asset value, active addresses, depth, premiums and discounts |
| ZK | Integrations, proving latency, generation costs, actual proof demand |
| Metaverse | Event participation, return visits, creator earnings, operating costs |
| RWA | Underlying assets, net subscriptions, redemption times, defaults and disclosure |
| Stablecoins | Supply changes, adjusted payment volume, active addresses, redemption capacity |
Addresses are not users, transfers are not necessarily payments, and TVL is not revenue. Read metrics alongside product mechanics to judge whether attention is translating into sustained demand.
